What type of disabilities qualify for an account?

Any disability that qualifies for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or blindness, provided such disability or blindness developed before the age of 26, is an eligible disability for purposes of opening a STABLE account. Some of the conditions recognized by the Social Security Administration that could qualify based on the level of severity include: blindness, hearing loss (deafness), epilepsy, autism/Asperger, and more. Those who don’t receive SSI or SSDI benefits are still eligible if they can get a signed Diagnosis Form from a licensed physician indicating that they are blind or have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that results in marked and severe functional limitations, and that such condition developed before the age of 26 and will last, or has lasted, at least a year.
